![]() He's quite the opposite in fact under Tocchet. He hasn't been that out of control guy you guys had. Tocchet clearly has a lot of influence on Downie. In fairness, he's not the same player he was in Philly. The guy wasn't as bad as he was made out to be in the past, and is not the poster child for solving world peace as he's being made out to be in Pittsburgh by some. ![]() Suddenly, he's a changed man, a good team mate- a patron Saint and the next pope-because he's in Pittsburgh. You don't need to look any further than articles written by some of Pittsburghs hockey writers to prove this point. The Grinch, and the guy that steals someone's parking space. When Downie was a Flyer he was a combination of Hitler, the AntiChrist, Satan. That being said-the majority of Penguins fan love for Downie is hysterical/embarrasing and hypocritical. You get it-are objective and generally willing to listen to all sides of an argument. What I'm about to say is NOT directed at you. He is, ultimately, Steve Downie.take'm or leave'm. Smooth to the touch, nice looking, serving purpose (though I am not sure what purpose moss plays.haha).but then, he may do something that will have you cursing his name and his descendants after that. When he is going good, he is the classic "love'm if he is playing for you.hate his stinkin guts if he is playing against you".ĭon't feel too bad, if he is growing on you a bit. He can drive you up the wall while at the same time, providing showcases where you are glad he is on your team doing things to drive the OTHER team up the wall, and doing the dirty work so certain other players on your team DON'T have to. Hell, he played on lines with Steve Stamkos and MSL on many occasions, for crying out loud, and even in Colorado, he saw some top six and PP time with the Avs better players.ĭownie's nature, as we all know, is just volatile. I thought the same when TB first got him from Philly (and I was right), but I also got to see what he can actually do HOCKEYWISE, when properly motivated, has his head on straight, and focuses on the things he does best, which is play very physical, agitate (without necessarily being a scumbag about it), and yes, the guy DOES have hockey skills. Well, Downie has a well earned reputation for being a complete idiot sometimes out on the ice, and unfortunately, THAT is what people note him the most for. I have to admit he's been real good at avenging grief given to Crosby and Malkin, and you see players focus on him and not them. He's also seemed to be thinking of WHEN to act like a rabid dog better than in any season but with Tampa. ![]() He's been pretty good in back checking AND scoring. Having said that, this last game against Florida has me rethinking it. He's been healthy, and taken a few stupid penalties but most of his PIM have been sticking up for other players and taking heat off the true flyercanuck and I discuss him routinely, and I've said how I'd like to see him gone. Just heard a discussion about Steve Downie's value on the Pens. ![]()
